less than a skein) about 1/2 yard (of 1/2) to 3/4 inch ribbon 1 bead,
button, or charm

This is not critical but... 5 & 1/2 stitches = 1 inch.

Knit until your bag is 6-7 inches long.
Pull the bag inside out and close with three needle bind off.
First Strap: With your bag turned right side out and fold flat,
so you know where to begin; Starting at side edge, pick up
15 stitches along the top, stitch for stitch...
There will be 45 stitches unworked along the cast on edge.
Row 1: Slip 1 stitch, knit to end of row. Turn.
Row 2: Slip 1 stitch, knit 2 together, knit across to last 3 stitches,
knit 2 together, knit 1. Turn.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 9 stitches left.
Knit straight until the strap is 5 & 1/2 inches long.

Increase Rows:
Row 1: Slip 1 stitch, increase into the front and back of the next stitch,
knit across to the last 2 stitches, increase in next stitch, knit last stitch.
Row 2: Knit.
Repeat these two rows until you have 15 stitches.
Bind off and sew the edge to the 15 stitches directly opposite,
leaving no gap.

Pick up 30 stitches left free on the cast on edge.

Repeat row 7 until this strap measures 7 - 8 inches
or the length you need or would like.
This is the strap you will put through the first strap,
and then insert your wrist through for carrying.
Bind off and sew this edge to the inside,
middle where you picked up the stitches to knit this strap.
Fasten the decoration of your choice to the bag as shown in the picture.
